When it comes to embroidered patches and their uses, there are many to choose from: some people use them to decorate their motorcycle jackets and vests while a number of sports teams and local clubs will use them to identify themselves and they are even used as a reward system for successful students. But they’re also great for collecting and trading. In the Boy Scouts of America organization this is very apparent. The Boy Scouts is one organization that has been involved in the collection and trading of embroidered patches and motorcycle patches since they have been around. The benefits of this is that it is a way to give individual scouts the motivation they need to achieve, enable them to meet new friends and to remember local as well as regional events.

There are hundreds of different websites these days which are dedicated to the hobby of collecting Boy Scout patches. There is always a large section of camp devoted to patch trading whenever there is a large gathering of scouts either nationally or regionally. These days, you will even find that some of the scout events have actually been organized around the purpose of patch trading. There are also other products that the scouts will trade such as sashes, banners, coffee mugs and flags.

The Various Kinds of Boy Scout Patches

When it comes to Boy Scout patches, there are three main types in the world of collectors. The first are the achievement patches. These are given to the scouts when they earn special awards or merit badges. Collectors will find the older merit badges that are not made any longer, very interesting. Older patch collectors love these vintage merit patches because they remind them of days gone by when they were scouts and were being awarded these patches.

The second type of patch is the event patch. You may find that a local council could hold a Klondike Derby in the wintertime. That event will have new patches on an annual basis. There will also be national events like Jamborees as well as regional ones and even statewide events. All of these events are commemorated with patches, baseball caps, and even T-shirts. And on both the national and local level, there will be special events such as Order of the Arrow gatherings.

There is also a category of patches that covers specific places of interest to scouts. The New Mexico camp, Philmont Boy Scout Ranch is a prime example. Philmont is a high adventure camp consisting of hundreds of thousands of acres near the town of Cimarron. The patches that are awarded to scouts who complete one of the tough programs at Philmont are extremely valuable.

Embroidered Patches can be Collected

Patches have been part of Scouting since the early days of Baden Powell’s first troops in the UK at the turn of the 20th century. They were originally used to denote rank as well as reward certain achievements; today they are so much more. Collecting and trading embroidered patches is something that Boy Scouts should really consider doing.

If you’re not a Boy Scout, collecting patches of all varieties is still a wonderful pastime. Church groups, sports and collectible outlets, youth groups and craft stores are just some of the places where you will find embroidered patches. All you need to get started is a handful and a desire to see and learn as much as you can.
